Cherrie Beam-Callaway is a native Nebraska storyteller with the Nebraska Humanities Council; she has been making history come alive for 35 years, giving programs to over 95,000 children and adults. For this program, Cherrie will be in character as “Mariah Monahan,” an immigrant to Nebraska from Ireland in the mid-19th century. Based on historical fact, Mariah captivates the audience in a dramatic rendition. You’ll be transported in time, sailing the ocean, riding the wagon trail, feeling the loneliness and fighting prairie fires. Laugh and cry with stories of successful crops, dancing, hard work, losing loved ones and most importantly, becoming an American.

The notorious Jesse James typically isn’t thought of in connection with Nebraska, but the outlaw was here. Nebraska was where he could find family and friends. It was where he could plan amazing robberies, make a recovery or an escape, and even sit for a photograph – his most famous. Some even say he started a family and wanted to buy a farm here! Author Jeff Barnes will share what’s known of the truth, the fiction, and the legend of Jesse James in Nebraska.

Several historic buildings including the Schoolhouse Art Gallery, the Gov. Furnas House and the Flatwater Folk Art Museum will be open for an hour or two before each program. The presentations are free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. After the presentations, the audience is encouraged to walk down Main Street to the Whiskey Run Creek Winery for live music, beginning around 7:30 pm.

    1:06 pm. to 1:09 p.mSoutheastern Nebraska

It’s been 99 years since a solar eclipse traveled coast to coast across the continental U.S., and southeast Nebraska is right in the path of totality. Viewers in Nemaha County in the eclipse path will experience approximately 2 and 1/2 minutes of TOTAL darkness between 1:06 p.m. and 1:09 p.m.

08/10/17 – In Nemaha County the Auburn Memorial Library will host a speaker – Eugene Lanning of Arbor Astronomy Group at 6:30 p.m.to discuss the scientific details of the upcoming eclipse.

08/19/17 – Auburn Chamber of Commerce will hold a pre-eclipse event at the Auburn City Rec Complex from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.. The first 100 people to arrive will receive a limited edition commemorative t-shirt, koozie and solar viewing glasses. The Auburn High School Math & Science Clubs will provide educational activities for kids while a special guest will speak to the adults.

08/21/17 – Nemaha County Hospital will, on the day of the eclipse, beginning at noon, partner with Lifetime Vision to host a lunch and watch party on the hospital’s north lawn. A limited number of $5.00 sack lunches will be available for purchase and Dr. Darren Wright will present safety tips for viewing the eclipse. Attendees will also receive complimentary solar safety glasses.

08/18 – 08/21/17 – Indian Cave State Park has a weekend of events planned in the 3 days leading up to the eclipse. The park will sell glow in the dark eclipse t-shirts, show movies such as “Tracing the 2017 Solar Eclipse” and “We Explore the Solar Eclipse Totally!” in the park’s outdoor amphitheater. They will sponsor a buffalo stew cookout and host a presentation by Native American Matthew “Sitting Bear” Jones on the “Otoe-Missouria: The Forgotten Nebraskans.” On the day of the eclipse the park staff will hand out free protective solar glasses for viewing of the eclipse while supplies last.

Choose one of many Southeast Nebraska’s towns hosting viewing activities in this prime viewing area – anywhere in the corridor linking the northwest and southeast corners of Nebraska. The rare total eclipse of the sun will be the last one until April 8, 2024. Be sure to remember your eye protection.
