Julian was settled by French immigrants who organized the St. Bernard Catholic Church in 1881. Julian was a flourishing city until the Great Depression began to take its toll. The town’s heritage remains evident in the St. Bernard’s Catholic Cemetery and Lafayette Cemetery. Julian also has the distinction of being the smallest “Tree City” member in Nebraska.
