Nemaha County's History

Nebraska's Beginnings

On behalf of the Nemaha County Visitors Committee, welcome to Nemaha County! From the pioneering days of the 1850’s, through territorial days, the Civil War, statehood and into the age of iron horses, Nemaha County was the gateway to Nebraska.

Nemaha County has seven communities waiting for you to visit: Auburn, Brock, Brownville, Johnson, Julian, Nemaha and Peru. Each of these communities has something special to offer, from small-town celebrations to the unique history of the pioneering west.

The distinctive geography of the area has shaped the county’s history—and Nebraska’s! The mighty Missouri River presses against the eastern edge of the county, while fertile farmland flourishes out west.

Visit our variety of recreation areas, more than a dozen museums and the incredible selection of fun for the whole family. From hunting and fishing to museums and antiques—Nemaha County has something for everyone!
